Homework at Ashleigh Primary School and Nursery

Our belief at Ashleigh Primary School and Nursery is that excellent class teaching is the key to our pupils making progress. We also believe that a positive dialogue about learning at home and opportunities for children to share their learning and follow their interests can have a part to play in supporting this in the classroom.

Reading
At Ashleigh, we believe that regular reading at home, as well as opportunities for children to share a book can have a hugely positive impact. Our children will have regular access to either Read Write Inc. books through their phonics lessons or our accelerated reader library which will enable our children to choose a suitable book which will build their fluency as a reader.

Knowledge Organisers
We undoubtedly want our children talking about their learning at home and practising, rehearsing and using their key knowledge and vocabulary where possible. Our curriculum knowledge organisers are an important tool in helping parents to understand the necessary knowledge and vocabulary which their child will be using in class.

We know that many parents feel that homework is an important part of school life; that it prepares children for high school and lifelong learning. However, we know that many parents feel that homework is an unwanted pressure; that children should be able to unwind when they get home and that homework can cause unnecessary extra work for the whole family. At Ashleigh we aim to strike the right balance between these two opposing views of homework.
